Elemental status effects are affected by your resistances. These resistances are found on your "Character Sheet." These Resistances can be affected by your armor, and even temporarily by potions and other items.
- So for example, having 100% Fire Resistance will prevent you catching the status effect
Burning. (You could achieve this temporarily by using 
Fire Resistance Potion.)
